PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
Improperly maintained equipment can cause serious injury to your fellow kendoka. To avoid unnecessary harm is one of the main reasons Kendo came into being in the first place, thus if you won't take care of your equipment, then you shouldn't be taking Kendo.

So keep in mind to ALWAYS maintain your bogu and shinai. Your equipment protects you and your motodachi (partner) who is helping you practice to make your kendo better.

This is the way it is in kendo:
Your opponent trusts that you take care of your equipment, so you won't injury them.
Just as you trust that your opponent takes care of their equipment, so they won't injury you
